History

MDG was founded in 1991 in Oakville, Ontario and grew to be the largest domestic PC company in Canada. They are particularly known for television advertisements for MDG Direct, a division that provides financing towards purchase of select desktops, laptops and televisions. They have launched large scale campaigns with Canadian Tire Financial Services, American Express , Visa , Blockbuster Canada and more recently TD Canada Trust .

MDG Computers launched an online retail store called MDG iStore on January 25, 2008.

Products and Marketing

MDG is a manufacturer of Desktop and Laptop computers running the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems, as well as a reseller of VisionQuest LCD Televisions.

In approximately 2007, MDG began a corporate strategy of using name brand parts for all major components of their computers, and shortly thereafter, adopted it as a corporate mantra. The goal was to differentiate themselves from various competitors that rely on no-name hardware, improve product reliability, and make improvements in customer satisfaction.

Historically, there have been complaints about MDG's pitch and bait sales practices, their low quality hardware, and their misleading claims in advertising it. In a paper published December 2008, Service Alberta investigators went to MDG stores in Calgary and Edmonton in 2007 and were unable to purchase systems for the advertised price. MDG was found not in compliance with the Fair Trading Act. One complaint involved the use of the wording "Intel Two Core Processor" in reference to the Pentium D processor, which could have led customers to believe it is part of the newer Intel Core series of processors. Backers of MDG point out that the processor did have two cores, in accordance with Intel's stated specifications as the "Intel Pentium D processor-based PC featuring two full processing cores."

At that time, MDG had acquired an unsatisfactory record with the Better Business Bureau for such reasons. MDG claims its corporate office has often worked with dissatisfied customers to resolve complaints.

MDG's corporate culture revolves around being a Canadian company. According to MDG's website, all computer assembly and technical support are based entirely in Canada, including their factory. MDG workers have stated that they are the only remaining large computer manufacturer to have all computer assembly and support agents in Canada.

Mass Retail

In 2009 MDG Computers has begun to sell netbooks through Mass Retailers and Online Retailers - such as Sears, Walmart and The Shopping Channel. The two skus that are currently selling through this segment are:

- MDG Mini™ 8.9" Rugged Netbook PC -
