Hotel Columbus Rome

The Southern Theatre is located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The theatre opened on September 21, 1896, and is the oldest surviving theatre in Central Ohio. It remains one of the oldest theatres in the state of Ohio. The Southern Theatre originally hosted theatrical touring productions, as well as silent films, vaudeville, first-and second-run motion pictures, dance, country music reviews, and community events.

The theatre seats 933 and is a jewelbox type theatre. It was restored in 1998 by CAPA (The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts), during an intensive 14 month restoration process.

The Southern Theatre is currently owned and operated by CAPA, which also manages several other venues in Central Ohio including the Ohio Theatre, the Palace Theatre, and the newly restored Lincoln Theatre.

History

Between 1889 and 1893 a series of fires destroyed five downtown Columbus theatres. Because of this, a group of businessmen decided to improve the city's South Side with a new hotel and theatre. The hotel was originally called "The Great Southern Fireproof Hotel and Opera House", and was designed by the local architectural firm of Dauben, Krumm, and Riebel, construction began in 1894. Both the theatre and the hotel were constructed of "fireproof" tile, brick, iron, steel, and concrete. The jewelbox theatre's audience chamber ceiling was modern for its day, from the proscenium opening, a series of concentric arches radiated into the house, resulting in an acoustic system that is nearly perfect today. The Southern Theatre was built to be self sufficient. The theatre was one of the first commercial facilities in the city of Columbus to use electricity, which it generated itself. Additionally, the building had three wells in the basement, from which it produced its own water supply.
