The Blade films are based on the fictional Marvel Comics character of the same name, portrayed by Wesley Snipes. They were written by David S. Goyer, Marv Wolfman, and Gene Colan, directed by Stephen Norrington, Guillermo del Toro and David S. Goyer, respectively and distributed by New Line Cinema.
The character was created in 1973 for Marvel Comics by writer Marv Wolfman and artist Gene Colan and was a supporting character in the 1970s comic Tomb of Dracula . In the comic, Blade's mother was bitten by a vampire while she was in labor with Blade. Thus, Blade was born as a dhampir, a human with vampire genes.
Plots
Blade
Main article: Blade (film)Blade grows up to become a vampire hunter, swearing vengeance on the creatures that killed his mother. He teams up with a man called Whistler, a retired vampire hunter and weapons expert.
Meanwhile, in the urban underworld, a feud is started between 'pure-blood' vampires and those who had been human, but were 'turned.' Blade becomes aware of this and investigates further, uncovering a plot to raise the blood god La Magra, something he must stop at all costs.
Blade II
Main article: Blade IIA rare mutation has occurred within the vampire community. "Reapers" are vampires so consumed with an insatiable bloodlust that they prey on vampires as well as humans, transforming victims who are unlucky enough to survive into Reapers themselves. Now their quickly expanding population threatens the existence of vampires, and soon there won't be enough humans in the world to satisfy their bloodlust. Blade, Whistler and an armory expert named Scud are curiously summoned by the Shadow Council. The council reluctantly admits that they are in a dire situation and they require Blade's assistance. Blade then tenuously enters into an alliance with The Bloodpack, an elite team of vampires who were trained in all modes of combat to defeat Blade. They'll use their skills instead to help wipe out the Reaper threat. Blade's team and the Bloodpack are the only line of defense which can prevent the Reaper population from wiping out the vampire and human populations.
Blade: Trinity
Main article: Blade: TrinityThe vampires succeed in framing Blade for the killing of several humans (who were in fact familiars being used as bait). Blade, now in the public's eye and wanted by the FBI, has to join forces with the Nightstalkers, a human clan of vampire hunters. Blade, Hannibal King, and Abigail Whistler go after Danica Talos, who has succeeded in locating and resurrecting Drake, also known as Dracula, the first vampire and by far the most powerful. In order to stop him, Blade has to release a virus that will wipe out all vampires, but he has only one opportunity to do so.
Future
In December 2007, it was reported that Wesley Snipes had launched a lawsuit against New Line, director David Goyer and the film's producers, because he was forced to give up screen time to Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel. Further, Snipes alleges he did not receive his salary upon agreement and was not afforded the decision-making power he was entitled to as a producer. Snipes is also optimistic that, once things are settled, there will be a Blade 4 .
However, on April 24, 2008, Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison for three misdemeanor convictions for willful failure to file federal income tax returns. Due to this, his role in future Blade movies is uncertain. However Snipes is optimistic that Blade 4 will happen some time in the future.
According to The Sunday Mail, it was announced that Stephen Dorff is set to reprise his role as Deacon Frost in a new trilogy devoted to the Frost character, which will be a prequel to the Blade movies.
According to newsarama.com, Warren Ellis is working on an upcoming Blade Anime along with other marvel anime as well.
According to Arrowinthehead.com Wesley Snipes says New Line is thinking of doing another Blade film and he is interested in coming back as the character.Cast & characters
Profiles
Blade
Main article: Blade (comics)In 1998, the New Line Cinema film Blade starred Wesley Snipes in the title role. The film diverges almost entirely from prior comic representations of Blade, completely revamping the character's demeanor, powers and weaknesses. Traditionally, Blade was often presented as loquacious and boastful, yet in the film he is stoic and nearly silent. Rather than a normal human with immunity to vampirism and vampire hypnosis solely reliant on skill and ruthlessness, he is a superhuman with vampiric powers but none of the inherent weaknesses, with the exception of their thirst. To suppress his thirst, Whistler developed a serum, the original version being implied to be based on garlic and silver. The movie Blade is portrayed as an African American born in Detroit, Michigan, whereas the comic-books placed his birth in England.
Powers and abilities
Blade is depicted as having all of a vampire's strengths and none of the weaknesses except for blood-thirst. Blade has superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, and senses. He also has a healing factor. He can walk in sunlight, as well. It is also mentioned in the first film that he ages like a normal human. He is a master of martial arts, and can speak Czech, Russian, and to a degree the Vampire language, and he has a great deal of knowledge about hunting vampires.
Equipment
In the movie series, Blade often uses a stylized double edge sword with an acid-etched titanium blade, that has a security feature that will release blades into the wielder's hand after a set time. This is aborted by Blade, or others, who knew of the system by pushing a hidden switch in the sword's hilt. The movies also saw him wielding varieties of throwable glaives, different knives, silver stakes, firearms, and some specialized weapons, such as throwable injector canisters filled with anticoagulant which is explosively lethal to vampires and extendable injector spikes worn on the back of the hand.
Supporting characters
Hannibal King
The character of Hannibal King appears in the 2004 movie Blade: Trinity , played by Ryan Reynolds. In the movie, King serves as a member of a vampire hunting group known as the Nightstalkers.
This is similar to the comic book where he is the leader of the Nightstalkers with Abigail Whistler as second in command, a character created for the movie and based on a recurring character from the film franchise. And Blade, instead of being a Nightstalker himself, sees them as young and inexperienced compared to him. The movie preserves the "former vampire" nature of King, but he is much younger and is not a private detective. Also, due to Reynolds' history of playing effusive, comedic characters such as Van Wilder, his portrayal is very much the opposite of the more serious and reserved Hannibal King from the comics. The lasting friendship that blooms between King and Blade in the comics never happens in the movie. Although King is already an ex-vampire and ally when they meet, the humorless Blade never takes a liking to King; many of King's jokes and comedic moments were all but lost on Blade and only serve to reinforce Blade's gruff attitude towards King in the movie. King, after jokingly asking Blade what he'll do after they wipe out all the vampires, actually asks Abigail if Blade hates him, which she confirms. Additionally, in the movie, it was Danica Talos and not Deacon Frost who turned King into a vampire. And in the movies, King was cured not by a Darkhold spell, but by the retrovirus developed serum that was seen developed in Blade .
Abigail Whistler
Abigail Whistler is a fictional character, a vampire hunter in the movie Blade: Trinity , played by actress Jessica Biel. Her character did not exist in the Marvel Comics universe, having been created especially for the film. Abigail is possibly based on the character Rachel van Helsing from Tomb of Dracula .
Abigail Whistler is the daughter of Abraham Whistler, born out of wedlock either before or after his wife and two other daughters had been slaughtered by vampires. When she came of age, she tracked down her natural father and asked to be trained as a vampire hunter. Whistler trained her, although he trained her separately from Blade who was totally unaware that Whistler had any protegees other than himself. Whistler also set Abigail up as the leader of one of the many Nightstalker units he had secretly founded.
At one point, It was intended for her to be a love intrest for Blade in Trinity and the TV series.
Abraham Whistler
He is a vampire hunter and mentor to Blade. Screenwriter David S. Goyer used him for the 1998 film Blade (played by Kris Kristofferson), but he first appeared on screen in Spider-Man: The Animated Series , and was voiced by Malcolm McDowell.
Blade
In the first Blade film it is revealed that Whistler lost his wife and two daughters to an attack by a vampire who had arrived at their home posing as a drifter. Whistler was beaten and tortured, being forced to choose which one of his family died first. These events shaped his hatred of vampires and his mission to destroy as many as he could.
