Mary Holt

Dame Denise Mary Holt , DCMG (born 1 October 1949 in Vienna, Austria), née Denise Mary Mills , has been the British Ambassador to Spain and Andorra since May 2007. Before marrying Denise Holt grew up in Russia, Japan, Lebanon, Netherlands, Iran and Bulgaria. She was educated at Bristol University.

Holt was Ambassador to Mexico from 2002 to 2005, being awarded on 14 June 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II a "Commander"" honor degree at the Order of St Michael and St Georges, CMG, as a director, (1999 - 2001), for Human Resources, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, (FCO). She joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1970 as Research Analyst for Spain and Portugal. Overseas postings included Ireland in 1984 where she was First Secretary of the British Embassy in Dublin and where she met her husband David Holt , followed by a spell as a Director of Center America Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Commonwealth and First Secretary of the British Embassy in Brazil.

In 1993, Denise Holt was a Vice Director for the relations with the new countries emerged in Central Asia and the Trans Caucasus. In London she was a Director for Migration (2005-2007). Denise Holt, née Mills, married to David Holt has one son, Patrick, educated at Birmingham University .

Already a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG), Holt was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG) in the 2009 Birthday Honours.
