Martindale Hubell

Martindale-Hubbell is a venerable brand in the legal community, known for being the defacto source for finding and connecting lawyers with other lawyers around the world since 1868. It became a part of the LexisNexis Client Development division in 2004.

As a constant innovator in the market, Martindale-Hubbell launched the first website dedicated to the legal profession in 1996 with Martindale.com. The success and growth of the internet created another opportunity for the company to provide crucial information about life events for individual consumers. From this idea, Lawyers.com was born in 1998. The two websites together account for over three million lawyer searches every month, tens of thousands of side-by-side comparisons and the most robust source of diversity profiles online.

Martindale-Hubbell has been known historically for both the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, one of the oldest and best-known catalogues of lawyers in the United States, and the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings, one of the most prestigious and well-known ratings services for lawyers. In 2009, Martindale-Hubbell launched Client Review Ratings, an innovative new rating service for consumers of legal services.

The 140-year history of the Martindale-Hubbell begins with two separate publications:

The Martindale Directory The Martindale Directory was first published in 1868 by a lawyer and businessman. Its purpose was "to furnish to lawyers, bankers, wholesale merchants, manufacturers, real estate agents, and all others…the address of one reliable law firm, one reliable bank, and one reliable real estate office in every city in the United States..."

By the 1896 edition, the Directory included the basic information that still appears in our standard Practice Profile listings, as well as ratings and a section on foreign lawyers and firms.

Hubbell's Legal Directory In 1930 the Martindale Company purchased the publishing rights to . This Directory consisted of three parts: a digest of the collected laws of each state; court calendars; and a selective list of lawyers and firms.

Joining forces This first edition of the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory – combining the features of both predecessor publications – was published in 1931 as a two-volume set. Volume I consisted of the lawyer listings and Volume II the Law Digest.

Joining Reed USA Martindale-Hubbell, located in , became part of in 1990. There are more than 500 people working to develop the Martindale-Hubbell line of products and services.

Today, both Martindale.com and Lawyers.com contain the profiles of over one million lawyers and firms globally. It is the world's leading source of information on the legal profession, as well as a fundamental legal marketing tool.
