She won several medals in athletics events at the 1994 Gay Games in New York City.

Ghislaine Cournoyer was born in Boucherville. She is a retired nurse, who taught at the Cégep de Sorel-Tracy until 1996. She served on a regional health council for five years, and was a member of the Quebec public health ethics committee for four years. She has also been a member of the Red Cross board of directors (Sorel-Tracy section), and a secretary of the Association québécoise des retraités du secteur public et parapublic. In 2002, she served as health minister in a three-day provincial "parlement des sages". Cournoyer worked for the Liberal Party in the 2004 and 2006 elections before running for office herself. She received 7,987 votes (16.28%), finishing third against Bloc Québécois incumbent Louis Plamondon.
