The Golden Forum (traditional Chinese: 香港高登討論區 ) is a popular Internet forum for topics related to computer hardware and software, among Internet users in Hong Kong. It has also became a more general Internet community. It is part of HKGolden.com, a computer information portal named after the Golden Computer Centre - a shopping center of computer products in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

History

In the late 1990s, due to the popularity of the Internet, competition drove stores online. In an effort to protect consumers, the traders' association of the Golden Computer Centre launched the website with information about computer hardware and software prices, thus increasing the transparency of the marketplace.

In the early 2000s, a discussion forum was launched to complement the website. It was originally open in structure and without topic demarcation, and destined for computing matters. Very soon, its topics became broader-based, the discussion area segregated into "computing" and "chill" areas, each with their own topics or "stations". On-line discussion groups formed. The community, formed by ordinary citizens as well as computer geeks, would be interested in all manner of local topics. In the course of discussions, slang would be widely employed. Neologisms would often develop, and these would quickly pass virally into colloquial usage.

Topics are themed by hobby groups, and include Movies , Photography , Motoring , Music , Finance , Sport , etc . Although the name "Hong Kong Golden Forum" applies to the whole, this name is now usually synonymous with the "Off-topic station" within the forum due to its runaway popularity. At one time, forum members formed themselves into registered cliques, the most prominent ones being "Big mouth" and "DIY". HKgolden has become an influential media from which topics and exclusive news are frequently being reported on magazine and newspaper. Many people believe that reporters, police and even government may be active in the forum to investigate popular culture and public opinion.

In 2003, the website was sold to Fevaworks by the owner. In July 2003, the database was severely corrupted following a hacking incident, and the website had to be closed for maintenance until 25 August of that year, when the forum was once again re-opened.

Since the incident, a number of changes were instigated:

• membership category simplified to 2 types - "ordinary" and "premium"
• ordinary members are allowed to create only 5 threads per day; no limit for premium members
• in exchange for extra privileges, premium members have to submit proofs of identity and address
• dismantling of the registered cliques
• membership is now free

The forum still repeatedly suffers from hacking, the last provoked stoppage occurred on 8 September 2006.

In additional, the members of the forum had a habit to post Clown God Smile to other members' speech that is "famous". The smile means Hard Plastic, is a word that has a meaning of indignity.

Many of the members put Clown God's photo to many creativities, by graphics editing program, such as Special Abusive Language

Although the Administrator is loose in monitoring, but at the beginning of reopening, established the abusive language filter. Make Cantonese abusive words to characters that is Mo lei tau. Due to this abusive language filter will filtrate the abusive words to some strange diction, even sentences that is appropriate, it will make some sentences to be abnormal. Such as the word "asso", the filter will filtrate the "ass" to 「哈密瓜」(Hami Melon in Traditional Chinese), then it will be "哈密瓜o". This effect is named "Filter addition". Some members type the abusive language by unicode, causing the filter to be optional, causing "address the symptoms, not the cause". Finally the administrator to eliminate the filter, but the characters that is filtrated by the filter is Mo lei tau, a lot of characters is being used by some young adults as internet language, causing ones that understand the meanings felt being entertained.

Also, they made some special abusive letters, such as "JJable"(Means that some ladies cause some male to masturbate).

Graphics Editing

There are members that knows a lot about technology, and some knows about graphics editing software well, such as Adobe Photoshop. Other members named them "Golden Graphics Editor". Also, there are some members of graphics editing, such as "LW99". Members like to edit graphics of ones that are famous, or members that is acting special, to give them a taunt.

Due to Golden Forum is one of the famous technology forum in Hong Kong, Some of the members that is talent of graphics editing, the graphics that they've done, is almost like genuine. There were some indecent pictures of stars is from The Golden Forum, some pictures is spread around the web, causing discussion. Also, there were some tutoring teacher implied that the members of Golden Forum is tease them at the TV show.

Reveal Identities

There are many identities of the members is being revealed by other members, they called the act 「起底」(Pronounces HEY DAI, means reveal identities), afterward the victim(s) of it has to 「潛水」.(Pronounces CHUM SHUI, definites not post any thread in a certain of time and/or request the administrator to delete any post about it) Usually the subject is being revealed is the enemy of the member(s) or ones who criticize the Golden Forum at other forum(s), even the speech is right.

Some members utilize Web Searcher(Such as Yahoo! and Google) to search the subject's blog, ICQ, and other personal information.(such as name, personal photo, school attending, etc.) The photo may also be edited, let the other members to make fun of it. The members called them 「高登起底組」.(Pronounces GO DUN HEY DAI JHO, means Golden Identities Revealing Team)

Cause of that, some people because of resentment, post some thread about the subject he/she/they are trying to defame. Including the subject(s)' identities, attempt to persuade others to fool the subject. Some using voice-changer to make some realistic records, to misdirect others. Golden members called the act 「借刀」(Pronounces JHE DO, literally means to kill someone by others hand), finally the subject's real identities had been misbelieved, and there may be victims without any reason, is a way of cyber bullying.

"Star of The Month" and "Star of The Year" Election

In "Chat Stage", the members will hold an election of "Star of the Month" each month, to deride ones that their speech is very "famous" in the Golden Forum, other forum, even in the real world. It used to be one only in the Golden Forum. Some members in Golden Forum trying to get "Star of The month", post some bored speech in purpose, but other members ignored them, and called them "Fake Plastic"

Everyone can be elected to be the "Star of The Month". Everyone that had been elected in the star of the month can be elected to be the "Star of The Year" of that year. There were an exception of that in 2008.

"Wash Page"

There are members post something without any means. It called "pour water". Also there are members said that will reply a thread until there are 1001 replies. The forum system had been set to close the thread after there are 1000 replies to prevent exteremly load of server. I.E., There are members launched "Smile Team".
