Travelzoo (NASDAQ: TZOO ) works with over 900 travel companies to find deals and deliver them to subscribers via its newsletters and its websites. They have a Test Booking Center that checks deals to make sure they are bookable and available - the test bookers work on behalf of the consumer to make it easy for people to find and take advantage of great deals.

History

In October 1998, Travelzoo's founder, Ralph Bartel, launched Travelzoo.com with an initial investment of $10,000. In September of 2000, Travelzoo published its first Top 20 list, sent out to 1 million US subscribers. In August 2003, Travelzoo launched an email alert service called Newsflash. The company became publicly traded on the NASDAQ SmallCap Market in December 2003 under the ticker symbol “TZOO”. By August 2004, Travelzoo phased up to the NASDAQ National Market. In November 2008, Travelzoo reached 14 million subscribers around the world.

As of November 2008, Travelzoo has 21 offices throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Travelzoo has a global network of producers that work with travel companies to create deals for airfare, hotels, cruises, vacation packages, car rentals and shows and events. Travelzoo also has a Test Booking Center based in Chicago where “test-bookers” simulate the process of booking deals that are published on the website, in the Top 20 or in e-mail alerts. Travelzoo’s “test bookers” check for accurate prices, availability, long hold times when booking via phone and ease of booking.

www.travelzoo.com features over 1,300 deals including vacation packages, cruise deals, flight deals, hotel deals, car rental deals and deals on show tickets. The website includes SuperSearch, a search tool that will recommend the best sources for flights based on user ratings.

Travelzoo is most well known for its Top 20 list. This is a free email of the 20 deals of the week that Travelzoo's producers deem the very best in terms of price and value. They send it out to subscribers by email every Wednesday.

They also have an email alert called Newsflash that only goes to subscribers when they find really amazing deals in the user's local area. These are usually flight deals, cruises and vacation packages and very time-sensitive.

Travelzoo also has emails and Web sites for its users in Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, Asia and Australia.

Stock price movements

When Travelzoo had its initial public offering (IPO) on August 28, 2002, it was priced at $6.50/share. By January 2005 its share price had climbed to $110.62/share. From the all time high, Travelzoo fell to around $20. On April 18 and 19, 2006, Travelzoo stock rallied nearly 70% to close at $33.75/share on April 19. Speculation and excessive short selling are cited for the extreme volatility in Travelzoo's stock price, similar to what happened to many companies during the Internet bubble of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
