99 Pub Restaurant

Ninety Nine Restaurant , also known as 99 Restaurant , 99 or more affectionately, "The Nines", is a casual dining restaurant and pub chain in the Northeastern United States. The company is based in Woburn, Massachusetts outside Boston. Most of the chain's 114 locations are in New England with clusters in the areas of Albany and Utica, New York and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The parent company of Ninety Nine Restaurant is O'Charley's, Inc. Enterprise, a multi-concept restaurant company that operates or franchises a total of 363 restaurants under three brands: O’Charley’s, Ninety Nine Restaurant, and Stoney River Legendary Steaks.

History

Ninety Nine was founded in 1952 when Charlie Doe opened a pub at 99 State Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Unlike other pubs, Ninety Nine was one of the pioneers of the casual dining concept many years before it became commonplace. In 1962, the restaurant left Boston and moved its main location to Woburn which still stands today. Over the next several decades, the chain expanded throughout Massachusetts as well as the Providence, Rhode Island and Manchester, New Hampshire areas. The chain became known for its varied menu which goes from typical pub fare, such as hamburgers, to steaks and even rare fish specialties. It is also known for its "splatter" approach to decor, which is customized to the location of the restaurant — a technique since adopted by similar restaurants such as Applebees. However, many of the restaurants are being redesigned to have a more formal decor.

Expansion

In 1993, Charlie Doe retired from the company and his son, Charles Jr. took the reins of the company. It was under the younger Doe that Ninety Nine expanded elsewhere in New England by opening stores in western Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, and Maine. In 2002, the chain announced it was planning to expand outside of New England by opening two locations in the suburbs of Albany, New York. Shortly after this announcement, on October 28 , 2002, Ninety Nine was sold to Tennessee-based O'Charley's for $160 million. Charlie Doe would spend his retirement as a philanthropist before dying at age 79 on April 9 , 2006 .

Under O'Charley's ownership, Ninety Nine has drawn a greater plan for expansion while keeping the quality and standards it has been known for. The expansion into the Albany market became successful with more locations opening in that area and one opening in Utica, New York. In 2005, Ninety Nine expanded into the Philadelphia area and has been successful there to date.

Customer information

Potential patrons should be aware Ninety Nine restaurants in Massachusetts do not accept Massachusetts liquor identification cards or Active Military Identification cards without a back up ID. Only valid driver's licenses and Valid Passports are accepted for alcoholic beverage purchases.

Dressed to the Nines

Starting In September 2006, Ninety Nine Restaurants became refreshing their restaurants looks called Dressed to the Nines . The restaurants held a two week silent auction to take off the plaques and other pictures. The 99 reasons were launched with the new Dressed To The Nines look. The refresh was completed by the end of June 2008 in about 75 locations by now, the original 99 logo was extinct but can still be seen at a restaurant in Fall River, Massachusetts. The 99 reasons eventually replaced all the plaques and pictures.
