Dr. Douglas C. Merrill was most recently the Chief Operating Officer of New Music and President of Digital at EMI Music, a UK-based music company. Merrill has held positions in a number of industries but is best known for his work at Google Inc. where he was the Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Engineering.

Education

Merrill attended the University of Tulsa, graduating with a major in Social and Political Organization. He went on to Princeton where he earned both Masters and Doctoral degrees in Psychology. His doctoral research concentrated on human learning of complex subjects such as mathematics and computer programming, and was widely published in academic journals. He received a Spencer Foundation Fellowship for his doctoral research.

Research and Teaching

Following Princeton, Merrill spent two years as a Visiting Scholar at Northwestern University’s Institute for the Learning Sciences. Merrill then become an Information Scientist at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA. At RAND, Merrill continued his research into technology and education, studying topics such as incorporating technology in schools and the use of computer simulation in education. Additional research interests included team dynamics and organizational effectiveness, with an emphasis on studying how successful military units communicate during battles and training exercises. Following RAND, Merrill spent time in Southeast Asia, consulting and teaching courses on Information Security.

Financial Services and Information Security

Merrill joined Price Waterhouse as a Senior Manager, ultimately becoming leader of the West Coast security practices and a national leader for a new security implementation practice. Merrill left Price Waterhouse to join Charles Schwab as Senior Vice President of Information Security. As Schwab’s Chief Information Security Officer, he was responsible for all security practices and disaster recovery strategies worldwide. He later held the position of Senior Vice President of Common Infrastructure, and then moved into Human Resources as Senior Vice President of Human Resources Strategy. Ultimately Merrill became part of the retail brokerage area, where he worked on data warehousing. During this time he became a licensed securities broker and principal.

Work at Google

At Google, Merrill was a central player in bringing the company to its IPO as well as managing the related regulatory activities. While at Google, he led a team of 700 people worldwide, including all internal engineering and support, security operations, systems operations, Information Technology, financial and billing systems, and the HR, CRM, salesforce, and process automation tools. Merrill was also active in the company's efforts to expand and promote Internet access and information availability in developing countries throughout the Middle East and Africa. He became publicly well-known for his lectures on innovation

Current Work

Merrill's book ( Getting Organized in the Google Era: How to get stuff out of your head, Find it when you need it, and Get it done right ) is due out in March, 2010, from Broadway Business Books. He is currently lecturing and teaching workshops on the topics of organization, innovation, and information technology. Merill sits on the Boards of Directors for a variety of start-up companies in the US and UK. Merrill has also recently contributed chapters to a variety of developmental books such as "30 Things to do When You're 30". Merrill supports several philanthropies related to drug abuse recovery and animal rescue, and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA.
