Discount Dress Form

A Dress Agency is a small retail shopping establishment operated for the purpose of selling an individuals (usually a ladies) unwanted items of clothing, and selling them on to the public.

The agency usually charges a commission for this. The types of clothes involved are often too valuable or in good enough condition to warrant resale, rather than just disposing of the item, or donating it to a charity shop. Because of this, Dress Agencies typically contain a modern collection of last season clothes or vintage clothing. The dress agent will not accept clothing that is too old or not in resalable quality, as their income is based on what they can sell, and the selling space is limited.

Sometimes the owner of the clothes have received them from an unwanted gift, or bought the item but are then unable to return it. Sometimes the garments are new and have been used.

Popularity of Dress Agencies

Dress Agencies are often popular with people who are frugal, and people who live on a limited or fixed income. Although there are also Dress Agencies that specialise the full range of quality available, with some only stocking the very high end fashion clothing, such as clothes that are still perfectly acceptable, but are last seasons.

Environmentalists may prefer buying second-hand goods as this uses fewer natural resources and would appear do less damage to the environment than by buying new goods, in part because the goods are usually collected locally. In addition, reusing second-hand items is another form of recycling, and thus reduces the amount of waste going to landfill sites.

Also, people who oppose sweat shops often purchase second-hand clothing as an alternative to supporting clothing companies which have dubious ethical practices.

Dress Agencies are also popular with eBay sellers who shop specifically for items of clothes they are looking for, such as a Size 16 Blue Blouse for example.

Pricing & Procedure

When selling a item of clothing, the owner of the item takes it into their local Dress Agent shop, who will then determine it's price based on the quality of the item, its label, and the season (such as the item being a coat in winter).

The owner and the agent then agree on this price, and leaves the item in the shop where the agent then puts it up for sale. Eventually the item will be sold, and if not, the agent will usually discount the item after a month. If the item is still not sold after this, the item is often removed from sale.

The owner will either collect the unsold item, or the agent will donate it to charity. In the event of a sale, the agent will keep a commission, this can vary between agencies, a typical example would be 50%. The remaining funds will be returned to the owner when the next visit the shop.

In the United Kingdom, second hand goods are exempt from VAT so will already be much cheaper than buying the item new, especially on the very modern items stocked in some of the agencies.
