EXPRESS is an American specialty fashion retailer headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. Marketed as modern style for young fashion-forward men and women, driven entirely by original design, Express operates over 550 stores in the United States and generates $1.8 billion in annual sales.

History

The first Express store was opened in 1980 ( as Limited Express), in the Chicago Water Tower as a younger, hipper version of The Limited. Current CEO Michael Weiss joined the brand in 1981 when the test expanded to include eight stores. By 1986, Express was 250 stores strong and began testing the sale of men’s merchandise in 16 stores the following year. Men’s fashion proved so popular that the line was spun off into its own brand, Structure, in 1989. In the same year, Michael Weiss was named Merchandiser of the Year by Apparel Merchandising Magazine . Express topped off a decade of outstanding growth by hitting the $1 billion mark in 1991.

In 2001, Express became a dual gender brand once again with the reintegration of Structure as Express Men. Dual gender Express stores began opening the following year. The newly unified brand debuted its first ever national television campaign, which featured men’s and women’s looks as well as denim.

Structure

In 2001, Structure, a Limited Brands division, was consolidated into the company as ExpressMen . Structure was a line of wear-to-work and casual wear clothing for men, which began in Express stores. By 1993, the line had become popular enough that Limited Brands instituted it as an independent division. Due to sagging sales, however, Limited brought Structure back under Express management in 2001, making Express a dual-gender brand. In 2003, after the closing or re-branding of all Structure stores, the Structure brand name was sold to Sears.

Express as a Privately-Held Company

On May 15 , 2007 , Limited Brands announced its intent to sell a 67% stake in Express to an affiliate of a private equity firm called Golden Gate Capital Partners, based in San Francisco. When the sale was finalized in July 2007, Golden Gate's stake in the company was 75% instead of the announced 67%.

As a freestanding, independent, privately-held company, Express operates more than 550 stores across the United States, generates nearly $1.8 billion in sales annually, and is one of the ten largest specialty retail apparel brands in the country.

Styles

Although primarily associated with women's clothes, Express is a dual-gender brand. Some of the styles that Express is known for are its Editor Pants for women, the 1MX Shirt for men as well as Express Jeans for both genders (formerly X2 Jeans).

In 2006, Express introduced the King of Prides collection for men, which includes premium denim, and ultra-premium t-shirts and hoodies starting at US$60. The collection competes with independent luxury t-shirt makers like Affliction Clothing, and Monarchy.

In 2007, Express introduced a premium denim line, with a unique stitching on the back pockets called DPD.

In April 2008, Express released a limited women's collection designed by Celia Birtwell.

More recently in early 2009, replacing the discontinued DPD jeans; express introduced it's newest premium denim line, Reerocks in both women and in men. In women, the Reerock jeans come in lengths, whereas with premium or specialty denim all come in regular or long lengths. Just like the DPD jeans, Reerocks also have intricate stitching on the back pockets and the materials are different.

Also in 2009, Express denium line was expanded with the comeback of its extra low rise Zelda jeans as well as introducing two new styles. One is a women's denim, barely bootcut in either the low rise Zelda or the regular rise Stella. The other is the men's denim, Zach which is a trendy skinny leg.

Express jeans come in different washes from darkest to lightest and fits from loose to tight.

For women's denim:

Eva styles: more for the curvier women customer with a regular rise Mia styles (limited style): high waist rise Zelda styles: ultra low rise ideal for those women customers who likes their jeans sitting lower on their hips. Stella styles: the classic mid rise jeans. These jeans are for women customers who like their jeans to sit just a little below their belly button. Most women customers prefer the Stella jeans over the other styles.

For men's denim:

Blake styles: more for the male customer who likes their jeans very baggy. Kingston styles: jeans for the male customer who likes to still have loose, but more classic and casual than the Blake. Kingston jeans are the jean that male customers would like to wear on a daily basis Rocco styles: just a little bit slimmer than the Kingston jean. This jean is just like the Kingston where is it casual, but the majority of male customers prefer the Rocco when going out on the town. It is a little more dressy than the Kingston especially if it is purchased in a darker wash and paired with a men's 1MX dress shirt. Zach styles: these jeans are the male version of the skinny jean. It is for the male customer who likes to take risks and be on top of fashion. The Zach denim is the denim to wear for the ultra chic, ultra stylish modern male.

Express clothes are designed at the Express Design Studio on 111 Fifth Avenue New York, New York in Manhattan's Flatiron District.

Criticism and Controversy

Express' return policy has been a source of controversy. The original policy required that the original receipt(s) and a valid form of identification (driver's license, state, military, passport, or any type of government issued ID) must be presented within a 90 day limit for returns. The ID was used to track how frequently a customer made returns or exchanges. If a customer made multiple returns or exchanges within a certain period of time, he or she would be denied a return. This system was used to prevent fraudulent returns or exchanges. In 2008, returns with a receipt no longer require a valid ID, although throughout the New York and New Jersey area, one must still have a valid ID to make returns. Returns without a receipt require a valid ID and may be denied. As of March 2009, however, the original return policy has been reinstated.

Employment

Express' policies for employment place a high emphasis on appearance, attitude, and sale goals. Employees are encouraged to dress sexy and professional and to look highly groomed. The attitudes they encourage are friendly and hospitable: they encourage a certain level of bonding with the customer to boost success and to encourage people to return. Employees are also required to read a board in the back room with the sales goals of the day and listen to a recording of a manager's voice discussing their percentages of sales and required goals. Conversion is a term they use to refer to converting "lookers" into "buyers." They measure this by tracking how many people walk into the stores with sensors vs. how many sales they have in two hour segments. The environment is high-pressure and through headsets employees are often reminded of their goals within sales and also credit card accounts. Employees are expected to open a certain number of credit cards for new shoppers within each week of work. This is heavily emphasized as people who open accounts with Express tend to spend up to 60% more at the company in a year.
