College President and Cabinet

Dr. VIRGINIA CARSON, PRESIDENT OF SOUTH GEORGIA COLLEGE: Dr. Virginia Carson became President of South Georgia College (SGC) on February 1, 2009, after serving as SGC Interim President since March 1, 2008. She was Inauguarated on April 23, 2009, in McGouirk Auditorium in Peterson Hall. Prior to this appointment Dr. Virginia Carson served as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Georgia Highlands College (GHC) in Rome, Georgia since 2001.

She served as Dean for Academic Services for Georgia Perimeter College’s (GPC) Clarkston, Georgia, campus from 2000 to 2001. During the 1999-2000 academic year, she was a Fellow of the American Council on Education at Northern Virginia Community College. Dr. Carson previously chaired the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering, also on GPC’s Clarkston campus, where she was Professor of Mathematics.

Dr. Carson is 2008-2009 President of the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP). She represented Georgia on the Executive Council of the SACS Commission on Colleges and chaired the Georgia SACS Commissioners in 2008. She served as a SACS Commissioner from 2005 to 2008. She had a Fulbright for International Education in Germany in 2004. She was Editor of The AMATYC Review, the semi-annual refereed mathematics journal of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), from 1998 to 2003.

She is a Rotarian and has served in numerous community organizations including those connected with health and criminal justice and Chambers of Commerce.

Dr. Carson holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and an M.Ed. and Ph.D. from Georgia State University, all in mathematics education.

DR. CARL MCDONALD, VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS : Dr. Carl McDonald is a graduate of Auburn University (B.A.), Florida State University (M.A., Ph.D.), Georgia Southwestern State University (M. Ed.), and Emory University (M.Div.). Dr. McDonald has taught at Florida State University, Gordon College, Middle Georgia College, Emory University, and South Georgia College, and has been an academic division chairperson of Humanities and Learning Support. During his 27 years with the University System of Georgia, he has served as chairperson of the Learning Support Academic Advisory Committee, chairperson of the Educator Preparation Academic Advisory Committee, a member of the Chancellor’s Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, a representative to the System Council on International Education, the English Academic Advisory Committee, the Arts and Sciences Deans Committee, and the Study Abroad Committee. Dr. McDonald is a member of the Board of Directors for the local Chamber of Commerce and a past Rotarian of the Year.

MS. WANDA LLOYD, VICE PRESIDENT FOR BUSINESS AFFAIRS : Ms Wanda Lloyd has more than 30 years of experience/expertise in business management, university procedures, and state regulations. Ms. Lloyd received her bachelor’s degree in business administration in accounting from Georgia Southern University and holds a master’s degree in public administration from Valdosta State University. Prior to accepting her position at South Georgia College, Ms. Lloyd had served in various capacities in the Business Office at Georgia Southern University until 1989 when she joined the staff of South Georgia College. She currently serves on the University System Chief Business Officers Advisory Council and holds memberships in several professional organizations including NACUBO, SACUBO and NACAS.

DR. JAMES A. COTTINGHAM, VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS : Dr. Jim Cottingham was recently recognized for completing 30 years of service at South Georgia College. In addition to serving as Vice President for Student Affairs since 1995, he is a Professor of Education and Psychology. Dr. Cottingham holds an associate of arts degree from South Georgia College, a bachelor of arts from Appalachian State University, a master of arts from Teachers College of Columbia University, and an Ed.D. in higher education from the University of Georgia. Dr. Cottingham has chaired the Regents Administrative Committee on Student Affairs and has served on the University System Academic Advisory Committees for Psychology and Teacher Education. Other positions he has held include Counselor/Assistant Director of the Upward Bound/Special Services Program, Interim Director of Student Support Services, and Interim Director of College Relations and Advancement. Prior to returning to South Georgia College, he served as a counselor at Appalachian State University. Dr. Cottingham’s civic involvement includes Douglas Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and the Coffee Alliance for the Arts. He has served on the Douglas City Council and on the Satilla Regional Library Board. Having completed two terms on the Board of Directors for Coffee Regional Medical Center, he now serves on CRMC’s Ethics Review Board.

MR. WESLEY BROWN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ENROLLMENT AND INFORMATION SERVICES : Mr. Wesley Brown has 29 years of experience in the field of instructional and computer technology. He holds an associate of science degree in education from South Georgia College, a bachelor of science degree in technical, trade, and industrial education, and a master’s in education in instructional technology from Valdosta State University. In his position as Chief Information Officer, Mr. Brown provides strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation and coordination of the instructional and information technology systems for the College network and manages the computer operations of the student information system, including local area networks and wide-area networks. He also maintains a position as a Professor of Computer Technology at the College. Furthermore, Mr. Brown is appointed as Interim Director of Enrollment Services, where he oversees the areas of Admissions, Records, and Financial Aid. He also has been tasked with the implementation of Lean Six Sigma after achieving certification as a Black Belt practitioner. Prior to accepting his position as Chief Information Officer with South Georgia College, he was an adjunct professor at East Central Technical College and former Instructional Technology Coordinator at Citizens Christian Academy. Mr. Brown served in the United States Navy for more than 14 years in the field of Aviation Electronics.

MS. VALERIE WEBSTER, DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC PLANNING AND RESEARCH & INTERIM DIRECTOR OF THE SGC ENTRY PROGRAM-VALDOSTA

DR. RANDY BRASWELL, DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS, RECORDS, AND RESEARCH : Dr. Randy Braswell began his long career with the University System of Georgia in 1978, as a work-study student at Georgia Southwestern State University. He was a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia in Athens prior to assuming the position of Research Assistant at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton, Georgia (UGA/USDA). From 1988 to 1997, Dr. Braswell served as Director of Institutional Research at Gordon College in Barnesville. He joined South Georgia College in 1997 as Director of Admissions, Records and Research, his current position. Dr. Braswell was the Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs from 2004 to 2007. He also was the Associate Vice President for Institutional Research and Planning at Macon State College in 2007-08. Dr. Braswell has served on the USG Bookends Committee for joint enrollment and transfer, and on the Enhanced Advising Processes Committee. He has also been involved with RACRA, IRP, GACRAO, RACAA, and EPAAC. Dr. Braswell obtained his associate’s degree from Andrew College, his bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southwestern College, and his master’s degree from the University of Georgia. He completed his Ph.D. at Georgia State University.

MR. ROBERT E. BRUNEL, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

MS. WALDA KIGHT, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY AND FOUNDATION RELATIONS : A Douglas, GA native, Walda Kight graduated with honors from both South Georgia College in 1993 (associate of science) and the University of Georgia in 1995 (bachelor of business administration). For the past 12 years, she has held various positions of responsibility in the banking industry. Most recently she served as Marketing and Human Resources Officer with the First National Bank of Coffee County. As Director of Community and Foundation Relations, Ms. Kight leads the College’s efforts to secure private gifts, promote scholarships and enhance alumni activities. Ms. Kight is active in the community, serving as a member of the Eastside Elementary School Parent Advisory Board, St. Paul’s Catholic Church Finance Committee, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Coffee County Junior Service League. Walda and her husband Jeff are members of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2008.
