The Standard Hotel is a group of four boutique hotels in Los Angeles (Hollywood and Downtown LA), Miami and New York. The first Standard Hotel opened on the Sunset Strip in 1999 in a location across from the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, California. It is decorated with a hip decor of avant-garde decorations and furnishings, and includes the Standard's distinctive upside-down signage and logo. It was opened by Andre Balazs Properties who continues to run the chain.
The building was originally used as the Thunderbird Motel, opened in 1962, but had become a retirement home when Balazs purchased and remodeled it. Original investors in the Hollywood hotel were Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Benicio del Toro, The Smashing Pumpkins' D'Arcy Wretzky and James Iha.
The Standard Hotels appeal to a chic crowd and offer moderate pricing. The Sunset Strip location features a woman laying down behind the check in counter sleeping behind a glass window.

- The Downtown Standard is located in the former Superior Oil Company Building. It is popular for its roof-top pool and bar.

- The New York Standard opened in Manhattan's Meatpacking District in 2009. It is noted for its modernist design reminiscent of Le Corbusier and for its span across the High Line, an elevated railroad track on Manhattan's West Side. Its accompanying restaurant, Standard Grill, opened in June 2009 and serves American cuisine. When first opened, controversy arose as guests of the hotel would expose themselves to passersby on the High Line, often with the tacit approval and encouragement of the hotel's management.
