Cathedral High School is a private, college preparatory Catholic all-boys school in Los Angeles, California. Current enrollment is 740 boys. Cathedral attracts students primarily from near West Los Angeles (Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz), Glendale, Burbank, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glassel Park, west San Gabriel Valley (Pasadena, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Altadena, South Pasadena, Monterey Park, Rosemead, Montebello), East Los Angeles, and South Los Angeles (Long Beach, Compton, Inglewood, Carson, Lynwood, Huntington Park, South Gate). It was founded by Archbishop John Joseph Cantwell as the first Los Angeles Archdiocesan high school for boys in the fall of 1925. The Christian Brothers have operated Cathedral High School since its opening. Cathedral is located on the site of the Old Calvary Cemetery (which closed around the turn of the 20th century) in view of the Los Angeles skyline and the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and adjacent to Dodger Stadium in Chávez Ravine and Chinatown, Los Angeles, California. The school sports teams are nicknamed the Phantoms because of its location on an old cemetery. When construction of the new campus began in 2005, old gravestones and walkways were found under the football field and old gym.
Extracurricular activities
sports programs under the direction of Athletic Director John Ferrante. The school has 11 full sports programs that include football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, golf, running cross country, track and field, water polo, swimming, and tennis. Intramural sports are also available. Its rivals have changed over time, and have gone from Loyola High School (Los Angeles) to Bishop Mora Salesian High School in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, and currently to Junipero Serra High School in Gardena.Cathedral won the California CIF State Track and Field Championships on June 6, 2009, marking the first state championship of any kind in the school's history.
Cathedral is well-known for its football program, which participates in the CIF Southern Section Del Rey League along with Serra High School, Harvard-Westlake High School, St. Bernard High School, Bishop Montgomery High School, and formerly Crespi High School. Despite the school having been around for 83 years, the school's first night football game took place in 2008 against Miguel Contreras Learning Complex. Cathedral plays its home games Thursday or Friday night at "The Graveyard" at Cathedral High School. In 2010, Cathedral will move into the Division III Mission League along with Junipero Serra High School, Harvard-Westlake School, St. Francis High School in La Canada-Flintridge, St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, and Chaminade High School in West Hills, Los Angeles.
Cathedral's most successful sport over the past decade besides football has been soccer. The soccer team has won their league seven out of the past eight years, and have reached the CIF-SS Division IV quarterfinals or semifinals four out of the past five years. Historically, Cathedral has been strong in Track and Field. In 1946, they were spearheaded by future Olympian Bob McMillen and finished 2nd in the annual California CIF State Track Meet.
Visual and performing arts
Matching the fine sports program is an outstanding visual and performing arts department. The theatrical productions performed by the students and directed by Joseph Walsh match many of the top college programs in the country. Girls from neighboring schools audition and act the female roles. Recent successes include such musicals as Les Misérables , Guys and Dolls , Jesus Christ Superstar , Godspell, Grease , "Once on this Island", and "Urinetown" (performed at the Baldwin Park Performing Arts Center). Plays produced include Arsenic and Old Lace , Romeo and Juliet , One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , Enter Laughing , Big Mary , "The Diviners", and "Amadeus".
The band program is under the leadership of Dr. Brian Bartel, who developed the program several years ago at Cathedral. They showcase several concerts as well as playing at home football / basketball games and rallies.
