" Jesus Freak " is a song written and recorded by CCM group DC Talk. It was released on August 1, 1995 as the first radio single released in promotion of their fourth album, Jesus Freak . The song's title refers to the 1970s term "Jesus freak". DC Talk member Toby McKeehan said that when he was looking up the word "freak" in the dictionary, he saw an entry that said "ardent enthusiast". Since then, many of the group's fans wear products with the term to events featuring any of the three solo projects. "Jesus Freak" has been covered by Larry Norman and many other bands of the Christian rock genre. On the DC Talk tribute album, Freaked! , both 4th Avenue Jones and Chasing Victory recorded covers of this particular song.
