Next is a dating television show produced by Kallissa Productions airing on MTV.

Contestants

Each show consists of two contestants. Usually, one contestant is a male with five female daters or vice versa. However, there are also gay and bisexual contestants.

Show

The daters are hidden from the contestant on an RV, the NEXT bus, which follows the contestant's Next van. The date begins with the contestant being shown in a short clip, with the five suitors being shown after. Then, the contestant waits at a predetermined location, used as a site for the date. One of the daters steps out of the RV and, as they step out, the screen freezes and some personal information about the dater is given. Then the date starts. At any point during the date, usually when things start to get boring, unpleasant or the dater has an attribute the contestant does not like, the contestant can shout "Next!" to the dater and the dater becomes eliminated, receiving US$1 for every minute they last (rounded up).

At any point, the contestant can give the current dater a choice between a second date or taking the money he or she has earned for each minute the date has lasted. On most shows, the screen freezes and some replays of the dater's date with the contestant are shown, usually with one negative and positive scene about the date, and what the other contestants say. The date ends when all dates have been nexted or when a dater is given the choice between the money or a second date.

It is not uncommon for the contestant to next a dater at first sight. On one episode, a contestant nexted the first four daters and asked the last dater for a second date within the first minute. Faced with the choice of either a date with the contestant she just met, or a dollar, the dater opted for the second date. On other episodes, a few contestants nexted all five daters, left with no one.

International versions

The show has been adapted into French with local contestants and daters. Episode 1 was broadcast in January 1, 2008 on the channel Virgin 17.

The show has been adapted in Lithuania with local contestants and daters. The show debuted in 2007. Currently the second season is showing on LNK.

The show has been adapted into Chile with local contestants and daters. Episode 1 was broadcast in September 22, 2008 on the channel MEGA.

NextOrNot.com

MTV debuted NextOrNot.com, the online companion to the series, in October 2007. Inspired in equal part by ratings sites such as HotOrNot.com and online social networks like MySpace, NextOrNot.com allows users to browse through a library of user profiles featuring prominent pictures and personal information. Time spent by site users looking at each profile is logged, and at the end of each day the user whose profile has received the highest cumulative viewing time appears on MTV as the "Hottie of the Day."
