John Hardy is a brand of handmade jewelry.

History: Designers & Artisans

The John Hardy company was founded by Canadian designer and artist John Hardy in 1989, who visited Bali in the mid-1970s and became fascinated with the island’s jewelry-making traditions. Those techniques are still visible in many designs such as Dot or Palu (hammering).

In 1999, Guy Bedarida joined the company as Head Designer. He draws his design inspiration from nature, classical European jewelry techniques, and the ancient art of Asia.

Today the company, now owned by CEO Damien Dernoncourt and Guy Berida, continues to make handmade jewelry.

Timeline

1975:John Hardy moves to Bali and studies Balinese jewelry techniques.

1989:John Hardy started the company.

1991:Initiates sales relationship with Neiman Marcus.

1992:Sales relationship begins with Saks Fifth Avenue.

1992: John Hardy introduces its Home and Lifestyle collection.

1995: By the mid 90s, John Hardy is selling all around US, Canada and the Caribbean.

1999: Guy Bedarida, a senior designer of haute joaillerie of Van Cleef & Arpels , joins the company as Head Designer .

2002: John Hardy launches “Cinta by John Hardy” in the US, a collection of one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces created from exceptional gemstones acquired from around the world over many years.

2003:Damien Dernoncourt joins the company as CFO of Asia.

2006:The Sustainable Advertising project is launched, whereby the company offsets the greenhouse gas emissions associated with its print advertising campaign. The project supports the concept of Sustainable Luxury: giving back to nature when spending resources for business.

2007: John and Cynthia Hardy retire and sell the company to Damien Dernoncourt and Guy Bedarida.

Designs

John Hardy jewelry is known for its designs in sterling silver. The brand’s hand-woven chain is an elaboration of the traditional Balinese rantai technique. Bracelets and necklaces are woven link-by-link by a single artisan in a process that may take several days.

Greener Every Day

John Hardy is one of the first companies to take a position on global warming. In 2006, it became the very first company to offset the carbon emissions of its print advertising, business travel and lately, electricity . It does so by planting bamboo in Bali and in Nusa Penida, a small island off the coast of Bali and home to the endangered Bali Starling. In the ‘Wear Bamboo, Plant Bamboo’ program, collectors who purchase pieces from the Bamboo collection contribute to this endeavor because a portion of the revenues goes directly to this program. Each piece is inscribed inside with the number of bamboo seedlings that it will provide.
