Alcohol Facility Rehab

Promises Treatment Centers is a for-profit provider of residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities with locations in Malibu, California and West Los Angeles, California founded by Richard Rogg in 1998. The fee for a one-month stay is up to $49,000, which must be paid in advance and is non-refundable if the client leaves or is expelled prior to completion of the stay. The no-refund policy has prompted lawsuits against the provider.

Treatment programs

Promises treats addiction to drugs and substances including alcohol, cocaine, codeine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine and oxycodone. Addiction treatment and drug rehabilitation can be arranged from 30 to 90 days and beyond.

Limited license

Promises, along with the other rehabilitation facilities in Malibu, is not licensed to provide physician or medical services. In 2004, the state of California cited the organization for providing medical services, administering TB tests and having doctors conduct physical exams at its Westside location. Promises has stopped the practice as a result.

"Malibu Model" of rehabilitation

Promises was the first drug rehabilitation center in Malibu and coined the term "Malibu Model" of rehabilitation referring to its privatized program within luxurious accommodations. In 2004 it registered the term as a service mark with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The Malibu Model has come under criticism for being more about rehabilitation of public relations rather than a treatment for alcohol and drug addiction.

The Malibu Model differs from traditional models such as the Minnesota Model, by allowing patients more liberty in addition to privatized treatment whereas in traditional approaches peer groups are heavily relied upon for therapy, patients are not allowed to leave the facility and receive limited visitors.

Celebrity clientele

The Malibu Promises center has gained its notoriety from its celebrity clientele which has included Matthew Perry, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears.
