Catholic Central High School Ohio

Catholic Central High School is a private, Roman Catholic high school in Springfield, Ohio. It is part of Springfield Catholic Schools, providing education for grades K-12. It was recently ranked as one of the Top 50 Catholic Schools in the Nation. The school is known as the Fightin' Irish .

Mission Statement

We are a Catholic educational community where all members are challenged to grow and perform to their highest potential and to lead lives of honor, compassion, and justice for the greater glory of God.

Classes

The students are taught basic courses in mathematics, religion, language arts, reading, foreign language, social studies, and types of sciences. Many courses also provide AP classes for their many advanced students. The school also offers many electives, such as scrap booking, digital photography, economics, and more.

Classes are generally small (35 person per class average)

Campus

The school is at 1200 E. High Street in Springfield, Ohio. At the campus site, Catholic Central students from grades 7-12 attend classes. Preschool through 6th grade are taught at other elementary schools located throughout Springfield and Urbana.

Feeder Campuses

Prior to the consolidation in 2004, four feeder schools, named after their parishes, taught grades Kindergarten through Grade 8. Some of the schools offered pre-school, as well. The schools, St. Teresa in Springfield, St. Bernards in Springfield, Holy Trinity in Springfield, and St. Marys in Urbana then taught up to 6th Grade. In Fall 2005, all of the schools renamed themselves to Catholic Central Elementary and Holy Trinity officially closed. Catholic Central Elementary in Urbana announced they would be closing in Spring of 2008. They stated that not enough students attended the site, but will offer students transportation to Urbana students wanting to attend any of the other Springfield elementary sites. The other schools remain open and teach Pre-school through Sixth Grade.

Consolidation

In 2004, the 7th and 8th grade classes at the four area feeder schools, (St. Teresa, St. Bernards, St. Marys and Holy Trinity) were moved to the same building as Catholic Central High School (Grades 9-12). The consolidation was planned somewhat of a money-saving move. For a year after the 2004 consolidation, all four area schools ran with grades Preschool through 6th still taught and under the parish names, however in Fall 2005, the names were changed to Catholic Central Elementary to form a larger bond of consolidation and Holy Trinity was closed. In Spring 2008, St. Marys closed due to low enrollment.

There are currently plans to somehow find it so that grades Pre-K through 12th are at the same campus though nothing has been made official yet. It was originally planned that a building for the lower grades be built on the grounds of the main campus at Catholic Central High School, and then it was later said that Catholic Central may purchase the Springfield South High School building, after the current students move out of the school, as a part of a city high school consolidation in the public schools in Springfield. Nothing, however, has been made official and it seems that the final consolidation of the schools may not be in the near future. The Catholic Central consolidation received both positive and negative remarks and views throughout Springfield and Catholic Central.

Athletics

The school has gone to the play-offs for the past numerour years for football and soccer, and numerous athletes in swimming attend State Competitions. Central also has a drastically improved basketball team, that placed for the district in 2007. Central, which is a part of the Ohio Heritage Conference (OHC) Division in sports, has been successful in almost every sport offered. The sports that students can participate in are as followed:

Fall: Cheerleading, Boys'/Girls' Cross Country, Football, Girls' Tennis, Boys'/ Girls' Golf, Boys'/Girls' Soccer, and Volleyball

Winter: Cheerleading, Boys'/Girls' Basketball, and Boys'/Girls' Swimming, Bowling

Spring: Baseball, Softball, Boys' Tennis, and Track

Ohio High School Athletic Association State Championships

Catholic Central Has won the State Championship in the following Sports:

• Boys Basketball – 1996
• Boys Soccer - 2001
• Boys Soccer - 2007

January Term

As a semester in January, the school has "J-Term", or January Term. Students in the high school at Catholic Central, take two classes of electives in a day. The classes include physical education, Ohio Graduation Test preparation classes, robotics, art classes, and many more. Once students reach the senior level of classes, they can take independent study courses, or can study abroad to places such as Ireland and Costa Rica. The term has been nationally recognized, and in 2005, the semester helped rank Catholic Central as one of the Top 50 Catholic Schools in the Nation.

Hall of Honor

In 2008, Catholic Central inducted the first class into its Hall of Honor, which was established to recognize the school's distinguished alumni. There are two categories of inductees. The Distinguished Hall of Honor is for alumni who made significant contributions to their professions and are active in their community. The Athletic Hall of Honor is for alumni who made significant contributions to the school's athletic program. All inductees stand as symbols of the school's "Legacy of Leadership."
