Dave West is a British entrepreneur. He started off his working life as a market trader barrow boy in London's East End. Dave built a family tobacco business in Belgium with his wife and children. In the 1980s Dave founded a wholesale business on a double decker bus in Calais selling cheap alcohol and cigarettes. His business moved to permanent premises and was named EastEnders, which is now a part of the largest British owned cash and carry group in Europe making him one of the richest men in Britain. The business caters for the hundreds of Brits who cross the channel to load their vehicles with cheaper beer and wine. It also has its own house wine label - The Dogs Bollocks - which is cockney slang for something special or really good.
He is the owner and creator of the Mayfair night club HeyJo and the Abracadabra restaurant both located on Jermyn Street. Dave West became the subject of a BBC documentary in 2005 about this elaborate project, called 'Trouble at the Top'.
The HeyJo Club is a result of more than 2 years major refurbishment work on a building that once housed Turkish baths. Lord Dave West of Hollesley did not stop at anything to achieve his dream palace in his exclusive VIP club, and spent a staggering £4.8 million to create the nightclub and the Abracadabra restaurant located above it. The club has become very popular with Russian clientele thanks to the restaurant that serves an authentic and eclectic menu which includes a wide selection of Russian and Eastern European dishes. The restaurant is open all week long, from Monday until Saturday, 12pm - 1am and Sunday, 3pm - 1am. Meanwhile Hey Jo is open from 10pm - late, apart from Sundays when it opens from 9pm - 1.30am
The following year he paid more than £100,000 to attend David and Victoria Beckham's charity World Cup party, and said that he was subject to such an unwelcoming pre-party briefing that he chose to boycott the event. After winning the fierce bidding for the two tickets in an online auction, he was instructed to sign a confidentiality agreement, as well as being banned from handing out his business cards to guests or taking his mobile phone and camera to the party. According to The Independent newspaper, he said: "The confidentiality agreement would mean that, had I signed it, I couldn't talk about the party even to my friends."
Lord Dave West of Hollesley describes himself as a libertarian and is an active protester of the smoking ban: in August 2007 he hired Cherie Blair in his bid to challenge the ban (introduced by her husband and Prime Minister at the time, Tony Blair). He declared the ban was an infringement of his customers’ rights to smoke in his club and restaurant.
He became known as Lord Hollesley in 2006 when he paid an undisclosed sum for Queen Elizabeth I's lover Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex's title, Lordship of the Manor of Hollesley. The title was listed on eBay for a starting price of £45,000 ($70,000) and attracted interest from all over the world. Dave West offered Noble Titles (agents specialising in selling Lordship Titles) an undisclosed sum to take it off Ebay and sell it to him.
The title means Dave West is now known as Lord Dave West of the Manor of Hollesley.
West has a number of businesses in addition to Eastenders including: Ultimate Characters Talent Management, for which budding models can get their portfolios shot at the Abracadabra Photostudio, also owned by West. In 2009 Dave West purchased shares in the Bloomsbury Ballroom and the Pigalle Club. He also purchased a share in PR firm Forbidden London for an undisclosed sum.
The Piccadilly Guesthouse is another of West's projects situated on the top floor of the same building housing the HeyJo Club and Abracadabra restaurant on Jermyn Street. The guesthouse provides penthouse-style female-friendly accommodation moments from top London attractions, including the West End Theatreland, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, and Oxford Street. West also has a major interest in Archie Eyebrows shoes, which are designed by rock 'n' roll cobblers Terry and Liz de Havilland. Granite World is another acquisition, along with the Hey U social networking website..
Hey U differs from other sites such as Facebook and MySpace in that it promotes a libertarian outlook for the users - who enjoy 'Freedom of expression without being watched', along with the opportunity to communicate with West himself if they are lucky. It is rumoured that a number of celebrities who frequent the HeyJo club can also be found on the site, albeit under an alias.
