Marketing Sports Velocity

Velocity is a free, weekly publication first published December 3 , 2003 by The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky.

The full-color tabloid is distributed at 1,800 locations in a 13-county area in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Velocity is widely seen as an attempt by the Courier-Journal and its parent company, Gannett, to gain some of the market dominated by the Louisville Eccentric Observer , an alternative newsweekly.

Velocity targets the 25-to-34-year-old age demographic. It is consciously non-political, although it has on occasion covered hot-button issues such as the Iraq War, the ban on public smoking in Louisville and gay life.

Regular weekly features include The Bar Hopper, in which a local tavern is profiled; Rock This Town, which profiles a local band or musician; The Party Crasher, a photo-story from the weekend's parties; and "All I'm Saying Is," an essay submitted from a reader. It also includes a movie section called "The Big Screen," in which movies playing locally are given humorous one-paragraph reviews.
