Vacation Resort International

Marriott Vacation Club International is a timeshare program by Marriott International. Owners can exchange their weeks for week stays at other Marriott and other hotel chain properties, but unique among such programs is also the ability to exchange them for very flexible Marriott Rewards points, which can then be used for short hotel stays or even cruises through CruisesOnly.

History

Marriott Ownership Resorts, Inc. was started in 1984 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina with the acquisition of American Resorts and its 184 villas on Hilton Head Island which became Marriott’s Monarch at Sea Pines. In 1985, Marriott Rewards was introduced to partner with the timeshare resorts. A year later, Marriott's Sabal Palms opens in Orlando, the first property to share a resort location with a full-service Marriott (The Orlando World Center Marriott Resort & Convention Center). in 1995, MORI becomes Marriott Vacation Club International (MVCI) reflecting the company’s evolution from real estate development and sales to overall vacation experiences.

In between 1987 and 1990 5 new resorts were built, including Marriott's Royal Palms next to the Orlando World Center Marriott, Marriott's Heritage Club, Marriott's Harbour Club, Marriott's Sunset Pointe, and Marriott's Desert Springs Villas opens up at the same time as the non-timeshare JW Desert Springs Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, California. Nine resorts open during 1991 to 1995: Marriott's Cypress Harbour in Orlando, Streamside at Vail-Evergreen building, Marriott's Manor Club, Marriott's Desert Springs Villas II, Marriott's Imperial Palm Villas, Marriott's Grande Ocean, and Marriott's Summit Watch; in addition, the first hotel-to-villas conversion takes place at Marriott's Kauai Beach Club.

In 1997, Marriott Vacation Club International is entrusted with a national treasure, Boston’s 150 year-old Custom House. Following a multimillion dollar renovation, the city’s historic architectural icon reopens as Marriott’s Custom House, becoming the first-ever branded metropolitan ownership property of its kind.

Similar to its successful segmentation of the lodging industry pioneered in the 1980s, MVCI introduces The Ritz-Carlton Club—a luxury fractional ownership offering in 1999. In 2001, Marriott Grand Residence Club is created for those who desire the benefits of a second home with the amenities and services of a fine hotel.The first property breaks ground in South Lake Tahoe. Later that same year, MVCI announces its first resort in Asia— Marriott’s Phuket Beach Club in Thailand.

In October 2006, Marriott Grand Residence Club evolves to reflect the new brand name Grand Residences by Marriott. A year later in 2007, MVCI begins referring to its core timeshare brand as Marriott Vacation Club.

In 2009, Marriott Vacation Club International and Marriott Vacation Club celebrated 25 years of delivering unforgettable experiences for more than 400,000 Owners and Members, worldwide. The Ritz-Carlton Destination Club is also announced as an evolution of The Ritz-Carlton Club. This equity-based private membership program offers two choices – either a Home Club Membership or a deeded, Portfolio Membership.
