The Episcopal School of Dallas ( ESD ) is an independent school in Dallas, Texas.

History

The School was founded in 1974 by Dallas-area leaders and The Reverend Stephen B. Swann who remains the current headmaster. In 1995 ESD merged with St. Michael and now offers grades Beginner (age 3) through high school.

The founders of the Episcopal School of Dallas envisioned a college-preparatory curriculum that would prepare students for a changing world, delivered within a framework of commitment to Judeo-Christian values. Central to this vision is a belief in the inherent worth of each child. This belief underlies every educational endeavor at the School and is expressed in the individualized teaching and the supportive learning environment that challenges student to strive for personal excellence.

Campus

ESD is located on three campuses and continues to develop. It currently has 248,000 sq ft (23,000 m²) in facilities. The campus housing the Middle and Upper Schools is located on Midway Road and spans more than 39 acres. The first building - the gymnasium - was completed in the late 1970s. Classes were held in the gym until the main building was finished in 1981. A major expansion of the main building was completed in 1986. This expansion included a library, publication suite, fine arts facilities, classrooms, and offices. The Cook Math and Science building was completed in 1994. It houses the science labs, math classrooms, and two computer labs. All Saints Chapel was opened in 2002; previously, daily chapel had been held in the gym. The Susan M. Frank Center for Arts and Humanities Building opened in 2005. In addition to humanities classrooms and expanded music facilities, it offers a high-tech proscenium theater, a black box theater, ceramic studio, and a darkroom/digital imaging suite. The latest additions to the Merrell Road campus are a 55,000 sq ft (5,100 m²) center for arts and humanities and a new stadium complete with state-of-the-art athletic turf, locker rooms, and accommodations for home and visiting fans. ESD's rural outdoor education center, located in northern Collin County, is on 165 acres (0.67 km²). Plans for the new Stephen B. Swann Athletic and Wellness Center have been finalized, and groundbreaking took place November 19, 2008.

This new Stephen B. Swann Athletic and Wellness Center will increase the number of sports available to ESD students. The building is currently under construction. Along with a new gym will be new exercise facilities, an indoor track, rooms for pilates, wrestling, yoga and other events, and a new cafeteria that will face the school's water-filled limestone quarry. The new cafeteria will feature nutritious dishes selected and cooked by chefs. The wellness aspect of the new center is associated with the famous Dr. Kenneth Cooper and the Cooper Clinic of Dallas. The estimation for the price of the new gym and other facilities is around a staggering $35,000,000. After the gym is completed in 2010, the Episcopal School of Dallas will be one of the foremost, if not the foremost, schools in the country regarding wellness.

Furthermore, other plans are to build a tennis complex across Merrell Road on the Trout Fields of the school.

Students

ESD has an enrollment of more than 1100 students, including nearly 400 in the Upper School. The school accepts students from a variety of faiths and backgrounds. Graduates attend a variety of prestigious universities across the nation. Graduates of the 2008-2009 class plan to attend universities such as Harvard University, Cornell University, University of Virginia, Trinity University, Davidson College, Washington and Lee University, United States Naval Academy, Vanderbilt University, University of Southern California, Stanford University, and University of Texas Plan II

Athletics

The philosophy of the Athletic Department follows the basic mission and founding tenets of the school.

"It is our goal that through participation, with an emphasis on teamwork, unity, and commitment, we will prepare our students for a lifetime of service to others, which is the highest manifestation of God’s presence in our lives."

ESD is home to the 2008 SPC Division I Men's Lacrosse Champions, 2008 SPC Division I Men's Basketball Champions, 2007 SPC Division I Volleyball Champions, and 2007 SPC Division II Football Champions.

A native of Texas, Father Swann received a Master of Divinity degree from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. He attended the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
